Context

Futurity Systems was built around a practical view of futures work: the future becomes useful when teams can analyze, synthesize, engineer, and apply it.

The consultancy helped research, product, and innovation teams move from trend signals and speculative questions into tangible prototypes, artifacts, workshops, and strategic R&D outputs.

Instead of treating forecasting as a presentation exercise, Futurity translated research into designed experiences that teams could see, critique, test, and use to shape innovation agendas.

Wicked Problem

Future research often dies as inspiration.

Organizations collect trends, signals, and scenarios, but the material rarely survives the leap into product strategy, design practice, or organizational action. Research teams may understand what is changing, while innovation teams still struggle to decide what to build, what to prototype, and what futures are worth preparing for.

The hard part is turning the abstract into something operational: a prototype, a workshop, a designed artifact, a method, or a shared language that lets teams reason about uncertainty without pretending to predict it.

Solution

Lucas co-founded Futurity Systems to close the gap between futures research and prototyped design.

The studio combined data-driven trend analysis, design research, speculative design, creative technology, and prototyping. Its method moved from analyzing futures, to synthesizing new possibilities, to engineering conceptual or functional artifacts, to applying those artifacts with teams, users, customers, or markets.

The work supported organizations exploring healthcare, mobility, food systems, AI, commerce, and emerging cultural behaviors. Engagements included future insulin monitoring and device prototypes for Novo Nordisk, future automotive and e-charging workshop programs for Ernst & Young, and future of gastronomy workshops with NASA.

Futurity also built its own methods and tools, including a data platform and proprietary library of more than 200 data-driven documents to support trend analysis and futures research.

Outcome / Impact

Futurity helped teams turn possible futures into something they could work with: prototypes, workshops, scenarios, research systems, and design artifacts that made strategic uncertainty tangible.

  • Co-founded a futures-as-a-service strategic R&D consultancy.

  • Built a data platform and proprietary library of 200+ data-driven research documents.

  • Led a team of five design researchers on future domestic kitchen work, resulting in a concept and augmented reality experience featured at Milan and Dutch Design Week.

  • Supported futures work for organizations including Novo Nordisk, Ernst & Young, and NASA.

  • Recognized by Fast Company Innovation by Design Awards.

Role / Contribution

Co-founder, Creative Technology and Design Director.

Lucas helped shape the company’s method, led research and prototyping work, mentored design and data teams, facilitated future-focused workshops, and translated trend-forecasting research into tangible design systems and prototypes.
