Context
Automattic was preparing to announce an AI helper for WordPress: a product designed to support people building and managing sites within the WordPress ecosystem.
The audience was WordPress builders — people using the platform to create, edit, improve, and maintain websites.
Wicked Problem
Launching AI inside a mature ecosystem is not the same as launching a novelty feature.
WordPress has a large, diverse user base with different levels of technical confidence, creative control, trust, and workflow expectations. An AI helper needed to feel useful without being intrusive; capable without becoming opaque; and aligned with how people already build on WordPress.
The strategic question was whether the AI direction made sense for the product, the user, and the ecosystem — not just whether the feature was technically possible.
Solution
Lucas consulted on UX, product direction, and AI strategy for the product launch.
The work included research, product feedback, roadmap thinking, and launch planning. Lucas helped evaluate how the AI helper should be positioned, how it could fit into WordPress builder workflows, and what strategic considerations mattered when introducing AI into a mature platform.
